Uses of Electromagnet - Electric Bell

Electric Bell

Uses of Electromagnets:-

Electromagnets are used in many fields. They are used to lift heavy iron articles like Cars in a workshop, to separate iron from a garbage dump, in loudspeakers, telephones, electric fans, washing machine, refrigerators, toys and electric bells.

Electric bell:- Nowadays, you can see door bells in every homes. The door bell or the electric bell makes use of the principle of an electromagnet.

An electric bell is based on the principle of magnet effect of current. A horseshoe type of magnet is used in an electric bell which is connected to the source of current through a switch. In addition to the electromagnet, the electric bell has a metallic gong, a hammer to strike the gong and a screw attached to a soft iron strip (armature). When the button is present, the circuit becomes complete. Current starts flowing and thus the electromagnet attracts the iron rod. The hammer gets attracted to gong and strikes it to produce a ringing sound.

Advantage over permanent magnet

The main advantage of an electromagnet over a permanent magnet is that the magnetic field can be quickly changed by controlling the amount of electric current in the winding. However, unlike a permanent magnet that needs no power, an electromagnet requires a continuous supply of current to maintain the magnetic field.
