What is computer network: A computer network consists of two or more computers that are linked in order to share resources such as printers, exchange files and allow communication.
Types of Computer Networks
There are Four types of computer network. Types of computer network based on geographical area covered or scale of the network.
1. Local Area Network (LAN): A local area network that is limited to a local area such as laboratory, an office building or a school.
2. Personal Area Network (PAN): A personal are network is a computer network organised around a person. It is used for communication between devices such as personal digital assistants, laptop, mobile phones and printers that are in close proximity. You can use these networks to transfer photos, files, etc., between the various devices.
3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN): A metropolitan area network is a computer network that usually covers a larger area than a Local Area Network. For example, a network that connects two offices in a city, a neighbourhood area and so on.
4. Wide Area Network (WAN): A wide area network is a computer network that spans a wide geographical area. A WAN may be spread across cities, countries and continents. A WAN is formed by connecting various LANs and MANs. The Internet is considered to be the largest WAN.
