THE BLOOD VESSELS
The blood in our body flows through vessels or tubes called Blood Vessels. All the blood vessels are connected to the heart. There are three kinds of blood vessels present in our circulatory system - Arteries, Veins and Capillaries.
Arteries: These blood vessels carry oxygenated (oxygen-rich) blood from the heart to different parts of the body. The pulmonary artery is an exception, as it carries deoxygenated blood. Arteries have thick elastic walls. This helps in sustaining the pressure with which the blood is pumped from the heart. They lie deep inside our skin and hence they are not seen easily.
Veins: These blood vessels carry deoxygenated (carbon dioxide-rich) blood from different body parts to the heart. Pulmonary vein is the only vein that carries oxygenated blood. Veins have valves in them, which allow the movement of blood in one direction only. The valves prevent the backflow of blood. The greenish-blue lines that we can see just below the skin of our hands and legs are veins.
Capillaries: They are extremely thin blood vessels which connect arteries and veins. They are also responsible for the absorption of oxygen, digested soluble food and waste products produced in the body. The various dissolved substances pass into body cells through the thin walls of the capillaries. The carbon dioxide blood through the thin walls of capillaries.
